Why is volunteering important?
This article will look at why volunteering is important for the community, for society and for the individual volunteer.
There is no shortage of different types of volunteering opportunities abroad. We've compiled a selection of the best for you to consider.
Volunteerism is a powerful way to expand your world views, gain new skills, strengthen communities, and build empathy and understanding. So by choosing to undertake a volunteer abroad program, not only will you get to experience the thrill of traveling abroad, you’ll also be able to contribute to creating a better world.
Upon your return, your friends and family will love hearing more about your volunteer experience, creating a ripple effect as you inspire others to get involved with global volunteering.
The best volunteer abroad programs are those where you can really make a difference in the community, and learn something along the way. We think the best volunteer abroad programs should be focused on a key global issue, and also something you are interested in. For that reason, choosing a program that focuses on one of the UN’s 17 sustainable development goals is a good place to start. The 17 goals aim to end poverty, improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
If you’re not familiar with the goals, they are listed below, or learn more here.
1: No Poverty
2: Zero Hunger
3: Good Health and Well-being
4: Quality Education
5: Gender Equality
6: Clean Water and Sanitation
7: Affordable and Clean Energy
8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
10: Reduced Inequality
11: Sustainable Cities and Communities
12: Responsible Consumption and Production
13: Climate Action
14: Life Below Water
15: Life on Land
16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal
Yes, it is absolutely possible to volunteer abroad for free. Apart from paying for your flights and accommodation, many volunteer opportunities abroad don’t have any further associated program fees. These free international volunteer programs include Peace Corps, Volunteer Service Overseas (VSO), or United Nations (UN) Volunteers. However, while they are generally free to join, they do require a significant time commitment – for example, 27 months for Peace Corps and six months for UN Volunteers, ruling out many potential volunteers.
You may also want to simply pick up some local volunteering work while you are traveling, such as at a local school or farm, in which case there wouldn’t be any fees, and you may even get free accommodation or meals in return for your service.
However many of the best volunteer abroad programs do have a program fee, which is not necessarily a bad thing. This can help them organize the program, pay for marketing and recruitment and other service fees. It’s worth investigating further to find out exactly what your fee buys you, and how much of it will be going to the community with which you’re volunteering. Usually the longer you stay, the cheaper it works out to be each week. You’ll also make such a bigger impact if you can give more than one week to your volunteering trip.
The best place to volunteer abroad is somewhere that offers a program that matches your interests, goals and values.
If you don’t want to travel too far from the U.S., somewhere like Costa Rica is a great option as it’s an incredibly beautiful country with plenty of volunteer programs related to nature and the environment.
Or, if you are looking for an opportunity to work with animals in their native environments, why not travel to Malaysia and care for orangutans.
There is no shortage of different types of volunteering programs abroad who would love your passion and expertise to help them increase their impact. So let’s take a look at the best volunteer opportunities abroad this year.

WWOOF hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic and self-sufficient lifestyles. Volunteers, or WWOOFers as they are known, give a helping hand with the daily activities on the farm or in the home, and in return hosts offer food, accommodation and opportunities to learn about organic and self-sufficient farming.
Volunteers spend about 4-6 hours helping on a host farm while learning about organic agriculture and sustainability. No previous volunteer experience is required, as it is a learning opportunity. The length of stay is flexible from a day or weekend on a local farm, up to a week, full semester or even longer. Host farms are located all around the world, across all industries so you can volunteer around the world as a WWOOFer.
